Sleep Medicine
Sleep Medicine involves the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting healthy and normal sleep patterns such as experiencing disruptive sleep and difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep. Typical symptoms of a possible sleep disorder include excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, loud/obstructive snoring, gasping for air or choking in sleep and sleepwalking. Quality sleep is necessary for optimal health and can affect hormone levels, weight and mood. Untreated sleep disorders can increase the risk of additional medical problems such as heart disease and stroke. Sleep Disorders can be diagnosed through various sleep testing including Polysomnography, Multiple Sleep Latency Tests and CPAP Titration studies. Our office provides various Home Sleep Study devices for patients to perform testing in the comfort of their own home. These are most often effective in diagnosing sleep disorders but when necessary, patients are sent for testing performed in an accredited overnight sleep laboratory (Valley Hospital or Holy Name Medical Center). Our Board-Certified Sleep Specialist, Dr. Jason Shatkin, uses a full evaluation and treatment paradigm to decide the appropriate therapy for each individual patient. Dr. Shatkin evaluates and treats patients for many sleep disorders including:
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea
- Central Sleep Apnea
- Narcolepsy
- Insomnia
- Parasomnia
- Idiopathic Hypersomnia
- Restless Leg Syndrome
- Periodic Limb Movement Disorder
- REM Behavior Disorder
