Hospital Care

Hospital Medicine involves the evaluation, treatment and close monitoring of acutely ill patients in an in-patient hospitalized setting.  The scope of hospital medicine includes comprehensive patient care for an extensive variety of acute health conditions which may or may not include intensive care management.  Under the direction of Dr. Jason Shatkin, our skilled hospital team is led by Anthony Pacione, PA-C and Barbara Carroll, DNP, APN-C who currently have privileges seeing patients at The Valley Hospital in Paramus, NJ. Because of the wide range of illnesses treated in the hospital, our Practitioners’ expertise lies in many different areas rather than focusing on just one organ system. Their broad range of medical knowledge plays an important role in caring for complex patient cases.

Our hospital Practitioners’ coordination of care may include examining patients as they’re admitted, ordering radiologic and other diagnostic tests, ordering lab work and analyzing test results, prescribing necessary medications and other treatments, communicating with patients’ primary care and referring physicians as well as family members or caregivers.

PSONJ’s hospital team advocate for Dr. Shatkin’s and Dr. Gross’s patients while they are hospitalized, providing personal care and attention, as well as ensuring a direct line of communication with the physicians and a smooth transition from hospital to home or to the sub-acute rehabilitation setting if necessary.
