Sleep Testing and Therapy
During an initial sleep consult, patients complete an Epworth Sleepiness Scale questionnaire to measure their levels of daytime sleepiness. Based on those results and other symptoms of poor quality or disruptive sleep, sleep testing will be performed to assess for sleep disorders. We provide various Sleep Study Devices which give our patients the convenience of completing sleep testing in the comfort of their own home rather than going to a separate sleep lab overnight. These devices are seamless to hook up and wear, allowing patients to sleep normally and comfortably, giving accurate sleep data results. In the event a patient’s case requires special circumstances or additional data to achieve a proper diagnosis, they are sent to an accredited overnight sleep lab. The following sleep studies are ordered based on each individual patient assessment and resulted by Dr. Jason Shatkin:
Diagnostic Unattended Home Sleep Studies
- ResMed Study
- WatchPat Study
- NightOwl Study
Diagnostic In-Lab Sleep Studies
- Polysomnography (PSG)
- Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT after PSG)
- CPAP Titration
- BiPAP Titration
- Assisted Servo Ventilation (ASV) Titration
- Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT)
For patients diagnosed with certain sleep disorders such as Narcolepsy or Idiopathic Hypersomnia, treatment often includes prescribing oral sleep medications including Xyrem, Xywav, Wakix and Lumryz.
For patients diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, CPAP therapy is most often prescribed which involves the use of a sleep mask and machine at home. CPAP equipment maintenance and compliance data are reviewed by Dr. Shatkin and his staff periodically to ensure patients are using the CPAP device correctly and no changes in treatment are needed.
There is also a new Inspire Therapy treatment approved for Obstructive Sleep Apnea. It is an implanted device which stimulates the airway muscles, monitors breathing and delivers pulses to keep the tongue out of the airway. Rather than having to wear CPAP equipment to bed every night, patients can sleep with ease by simply turning the internal Inspire device on and off with a remote. If qualifications are met for this treatment, a surgical procedure to implant the device is performed by a referring ENT specialist, and Dr. Shatkin then activates and monitors the therapy device thereafter.
